Stand-up tips

Apart from the stand , there are now a few tips for a good daily meeting.

1. Prepare well

On an individual level, it is important to be a daily stand-up and know what you are going to say. It keeps the team’s energy high and everyone involved. Before you enter the standup it is important to prepare. Make sure you know what your assignments and blockages are and what you have recently completed. This information indicates the status of the problems assigned to you.

2. Choose a time that suits everyone

Most teams opt for a stand-up between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the same location. It gives everyone time to get the day off to a good start but does not require everyone to be present early. For teams that are geographically dispersed, choose a time that suits all team members. 

3. Hold stand up efficiently

Keep an eye on whether everyone remains focused to ensure that the stand-up runs efficiently. Rotate who makes sure that everyone takes their responsibility. Limit the duration of stand ups to a maximum of 15 minutes. Do you have a smaller team? Then make it a sport to keep the meeting shorter.

4. Make the stand-up part of the retrospective

Stand-ups are part of many Agile cultures, but this does not mean that you cannot include their effectiveness in retrospectives. Some teams meet each other daily, others meet three times a week. Discuss how you can apply stand-ups in retrospectives. If the team does not value a stand up, discuss why. Customize it, stand-ups are also agile!

5. Set a repeat time

Do not only arrange for the next day, but reserve the space for a longer period of time. Record that time and the number of repetitions of your stand-up in the agendas of the team members. Everyone is thus reminded to keep their administration up-to-date and to submit their reports .

6. Stay informed of everyone’s status

Also keep an eye on the status of the others. You may depend on their progress. Ask for it during stand-up if there are backlogs or reports missing. What blockades are there within the team?

7. Keep a record of the history of the reports

Navigate through the standing reports to get a better insight into the performance of the team members and the progress of the project. Find out why the performance of some team members is lagging behind. Make it negotiable.
